Do You Have Pain after Hurricane Irma?

The recent evacuations due to Hurricane Irma undoubtedly caused you and your body stress. From boarding up the home in preparation, to the long drive after being ordered to evacuate, to tension headaches caused by the pressure change due to the storm, for most Floridians, it was a less-than-relaxing weekend to say the least.

If you experienced injuries or added stress and muscle tension after the recent hurricane, it may be time to schedule an appointment with your local chiropractor. Learn the most common hurricane-related injuries, and be sure to schedule a chiropractic appointment before your pain worsens.

Car-related Pain and Injuries

If you were not part of the minority of Florida residents who were lucky enough to book plane tickets out of the state after the mandatory evacuation was announced, chances are you most likely drove a very long distance in search of safety from the storm. While road trips offer luxuries such as frequent breaks, opportunities to stretch and move your muscles, and less crowded roads, the recent hurricane evacuation was not so enjoyable or laid back. Stressors such as anxious drivers, highway gridlock, gas stations without fuel, and worrying about the home you left behind, can all play a part in neck and back pain.

Even if you were not involved in a serious car accident, sudden stops due to increased traffic on the road can cause whiplash. Symptoms such as dizziness, neck pain, headaches, blurred vision, and a stiff neck are all signs that whiplash or other driving-related injuries may have occurred along your journey.

While you may have found yourself reaching for the pain medication in your cabinet after the stressful drive during the storm, chiropractic care can offer effective pain relief and pain management without the need for pain medicine. Spinal manipulation, massages, and stretches can reduce pain and heal your body.

Headaches from the Storm

As a hurricane travels through your area, it brings with it an intense drop in barometric pressure. This sudden change in pressure often causes headaches, and increases the severity of migraines for those who suffer with chronic symptoms.

If you have found that you have an increase in headaches or that your migraine symptoms have worsened during and after the hurricane, chiropractic treatment may help. By performing specific spinal manipulations and adjustments to the neck and back, headache victims often receive relief from their pain. Chiropractors can also massage areas of the neck to help reduce stress and discomfort caused by headaches and migraines.

Back Injuries and Pain

Sprains and strains, on top of stress, are a common source of back injuries and back pain. Normally, a sprain or strain occurs after involving yourself in a high-impact activity such as boarding up your house or cleaning up after the hurricane. If you believe you may have over-stretched your muscles or ligaments in the lower back, swelling and pain is common.

On top of this, you may be experiencing any of the following pain from injuries during or following the hurricane:

• Muscle spasms

• Cramping

• Stiffness

• Pain in any area of the back

• Sensitivity of spine to touch and pressure

• Pain after prolonged inactivity (driving or sitting in car)

• Pain that has gotten worse or lasts longer after the storm

Back pain can evolve into more serious issues and become chronic or debilitating. Through highly-skilled and gentle spinal manipulations and adjustments, physical techniques and decompression treatments, the chiropractors at ChiroCare of Florida can work with you to create a personalized treatment plan and relieve pain you may be experiencing after the storm.
