5 Fitness and Recreation Destinations in Aventura

When the original developers of Aventura first began its construction, they remarked, "What an adventure this is going to be." The city's earliest residents agreed, and what was once "Turnberry" became "Aventura" after the Spanish word for adventure. Today, the name could not be more fitting - over 37,000 residents and counting take to Aventura's streets to shop, dine, and of course, get some fitness in.

Luckily for Aventura residents, the city is rich with opportunity to work up a sweat. From team sports to relaxing bike rides, check out ChiroCare of Aventura's top recommendations for fitness and recreation.

1. Founders Park

Located just south of the Lehman Causeway and east of West Country Club Drive, Founders Park honors those who fought for the incorporation of the City of Aventura in 1995. In fact, a commemorative monument for Aventura's founders anchors the center of the park. The 12-acre park is flanked by the Aventura Community Green Garden to the south, and the Founders Park Splashpad, a water play area, to the north.

Founders Parks is home to:

  • Bay walk
  • Athletic fields
  • Tennis courts
  • Open play areas
  • Quarter-mile exercise trail
  • Handicap-accessible playground

Additionally, Founders Park frequently hosts a variety of free courses including Yoga in the Park and Fitness Bootcamp Classes. Both classes and entry to the park are completely free for Aventura residents. Non-locals will be required to pay a $5 fee for adults and $3 fee for children under 17.

2. Community Recreation Center

The Community Recreation Center (CRC) hosts a multitude of activities, classes, and programs. Residents of all ages can get their blood pumping, whether through children's camp programs or adult exercise classes like Zumba. The Rec Center features a fitness center, gymnasium, and indoor basketball courts

As South Florida is notorious for its unpredictable weather, the Community Recreation Center is a perfect spot to enjoy some light (or intense) exercise without needing to worry about a spontaneous thunderstorm. Open 7-days a week, the Rec Center is perfect for the whole family. Registration is free for all Aventura residents, but proof of residency for Miami-Dade County is necessary.

3. Waterways Park & Dog Park

What's better than a park that caters to the whole family? A park that has an entire dedicated area for your furry friends. Waterways Park is home to athletic fields, a covered playground, open play areas, and picnic shelters. Waterways' 7-acre space is free to Aventura residents, $5 for non-local adults, and $3 for children aged 17 and under.

Right next door, the Waterways Dog Park is a 1.5-acre waterfront park equipped for pets to exercise unleashed. Featuring open space to run and play, dog showers, a shaded patio, and even dog water fountains, Waterways Dog Park is ideal for pups to play and owners to relax.

Location: 3301 NE 213 Street, Aventura, FL 33180

4. Aventura Adult & Youth Sports

Exercising solo can get lonely. That's why the City of Aventura runs a variety of youth and adult sports teams. Not only are they an excellent outlet for physical activity, but a group of peers is also a great opportunity to work on team building, getting to know your community, and more.

For adults, try your hand as part of Aventura's softball league, participating in adult tennis clinics, or playing a social round-robin tennis match. For kids, children ages 5 through 15 have the opportunity to participate in seasonal sports leagues including basketball, girls' soccer, and boys' soccer.

5. Aventura BCycle

No bike? No problem. With docking stations at the Aventura Mall Transit Station and the Yacht Club, BCycle is a local program that allows Aventura residents to rent bicycles. Residents have the option of checking out as a guest and renting their bike for the day, or signing up for a 7-day or annual membership.

Single rides with the BCycle program are $5 for 30 minutes, and an additional $5 each half-hour increment thereafter. The max charge per day is $50. If you're planning on going for a longer ride or wish to bike frequently, choose to sign up as a 7-day member: the cost is only $25 for the week.

Once you've rented your bike or signed up as a member, you'll be able to track your ride with a personalized online profile. Your profile will let you know how much carbon offset you've achieved by opting to bike instead of drive, and how many calories you've burned. Each bike rental features a complimentary helmet to ensure your safety as you ride. Visit the Aventura BCycle site for more information.
