Adjustments aren’t Just for Your Back

Chiropractic Therapy Pain Treatment Treatment Techniques / July 11, 2017

Chiropractic care is the method of using natural healing to help with acute and chronic conditions. Chiropractors take notice of all of the factors that make up the sum of your health – including exercise, nutrition, sleep and other injuries or conditions. This differs from common health care as it focuses on maintaining your health in its entirety to help your body resist a future problem, rather than simply treating the problem currently at hand.

With this in mind, it is easy to see how regular visits can help with so much more than just back problems. Chiropractic care can complement a variety of other pains and ailments, and it could be even more beneficial for you if you are experiencing a combination of the conditions that chiropractic visits can treat.

Neck Pain

Neck pain is caused from the nerves and discs, which sit between each of the vertebra of your neck. When one of the vertebra slips out of alignment, it pinches the nerves which sit between them, and this causes neck pain.

We all suffer with neck pain from time to time. Whether this is caused by sleeping in an awkward position, stepping on the brakes in your car too hard or simply not sitting in your chair correctly at work, a stiff neck is a common issue with pain that normally passes after a day or so. However, if your neck pain or stiffness does not improve after a few days, a visit to the chiropractor could be warranted.

Chiropractors are equally trained in handling neck pain as they are with back pain, and some even specialize specifically in neck pain treatment options.

Headaches

If you experience frequent headaches, you are part of the majority. Nine out of ten Americans suffer from at least one headache per week. You are also part of the majority if you take some form of headache relief medication to deal with the pain. However, side effects of this type of medication can range from mild heartburn to stomach ulcers and bleeding within the stomach lining. Luckily, there is a healthier and more effective method to dealing with this pain.

Not only can your chiropractor improve spinal function and alleviate stress on your system through spinal manipulation, but you will receive nutritional advice, guidance on posture and exercise as well as relaxation techniques to help relieve recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck. All of the above have been proven to increase not only the severity but the frequency of headaches.

Arthritis and Joint Pain

Arthritis normally causes problems and pain within the knee joint, but has been known to expand to other structures like muscles, tendons and ligaments. The most common form of arthritis in the knee, osteoarthritis, is caused by the steady degradation of cartilage within the joint. Normally, obesity or repetitive injuries from strenuous activities are the cause of arthritis and joint pain. Common symptoms include pain in the knee joint and surrounding areas, swelling surrounding the knee, stiffness and locking joints.

Knee pain can vary in severity and in certain cases may be a temporary result of bending the leg in an unusual position or suffering from a minor injury. However, if knee pain is limiting your day-to-day activities, you have restricted motion, or you have been told by a medical professional that you have arthritis, visiting a chiropractor might be beneficial for you.

It is important to note that chiropractors do not claim to cure arthritis. Rather, they prevent the damage that arthritis can create. If a joint is fixated out of alignment for a prolonged length of time, it will cause micro tears in the disc which result in joint damage. Chiropractors aim to restore proper alignment and function so that the process which is causing arthritis to worsen and spread is stopped.

Hands, Wrists and Feet

Pain or stiffness in your extremities (hands, wrists and feet) is often a result of repetitive movement and overuse. This develops gradually and becomes progressively worse over time. Even if the simple act of texting on your cell phone or kicking a ball incorrectly in a friendly game of kickball becomes a frequent habit, this misuse can result in a multitude of problems. Most commonly, pain or stiffness can be associated with misalignments. Luckily, the pain can be alleviated through chiropractic care. The following symptoms may indicate it is time to plan a visit with your local chiropractor:

Asthma

Asthma occurs from a number of environmental factors including pollutants, dust or smoke, or from a stress-related illness. As a result, people who suffer with asthma may experience coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. In the past, it was common for those who experience these symptoms to resort to using inhalers and focused treatment. However, in conjunction with prescribed medication, chiropractic care has been shown to help improve the condition.

With chiropractors normal treatment, which involves realignment of the spine and therefore nerves, chiropractic manipulation can eliminate hindrances during nerve impulses to the lungs and airway. By restoring the body to its normal state of alignment, organs (such as the lungs) can begin to function as they are meant to.
