Staying Fit as a Family in Pompano Beach

Our little ones spend a considerable amount of time strapped into car seats, seated at their desks at school, or plopped in front of the television after dinner. We try to keep them as active as possible, but between our hectic schedules and the desire to just curl up on the couch for a family movie night, it can be difficult to ensure that everyone is getting enough physical activity.

Staying fit as a family might seem like a daunting task, but in reality, all you need is one hour at least 4 days a week. Say good bye to stuffy gyms, and take advantage of all that Pompano Beach can offer, including your own home. Fitness can be fun, if you follow these five tips.

1. Pre- or Post-Dinner Walks

Whether you hop in the car to head to the beach or just power walk around the neighborhood, a pre- or post-dinner walk is an easy way to get some cardio. Luckily, Pompano Beach is home to 52 parks and facilities. This means that you and your family will only have to walk a few blocks to discover your next fitness destination – just be mindful, some parks may close at sundown.

For the younger ones, make a game of it. Try to be the first to spot a red car, or hop over cracks in the sidewalk. For the older kids, do mini-drills together every set amount of minutes. For instance, 10 jumping jacks every 10 minutes. Or, hop on your bikes to cruise through the neighborhood together.

2. Weekly Sports Night

Pick one night a week to amp up the competition. If your little ones are still a bit too young to engage in some family-friendly flag football or volleyball matches, try something like Frisbee instead. Another fun idea is to play a game of “Don’t Let the Ball Touch the Floor.” Grab a beach ball and take turns tossing it in the air, having each family member give it a bump to keep it in the air.

The first one to drop the ball is out. Keep going until the final two family members are battling head-to-head. The winner picks the sport next week!

3. Dance Parties

When in doubt, boogie out. Florida is notorious for its spur of the moment thunderstorms and Pompano Beach is no exception. If the weather outside is less-than-ideal for family fitness, simply move some furniture in the living room aside for a makeshift dance floor. Plug in some dance tunes and get the whole family moving.

Take turns letting each family member play DJ for a bit, so everyone’s favorite tracks get some airplay. Or, play some classic tunes and have a dance off. Either way, incorporating some dancing fitness is a low-impact and high-intensity way of working out as a family.

4. Walk or Run for Charity

Pompano Beach hosts a variety of charity runs and walks throughout the year. What better way to model the value of exercise and giving back than participating in a fundraising event as a family? A handful of 5k races are coming to Pompano Beach in the upcoming months, and while that may be too much for the whole family, there’s always room to cheer from the sidelines.

In addition to longer 5k races, Broward County will also be hosting more family-friendly short walks. Take a look at the upcoming events and sign your family up to get involved.

5. Walk the Dog

You can’t leave your fur babies out of family fitness. Right next to the Pompano Airpak Trail (which is also pet-friendly) is a dog park to run around with your furry friends. Not only is this a great way for your pets to blow off some steam, but it’s also an easy way to get you and the kids moving as well.

Put some fun in family fitness. With a plethora of parks, the local beach, and your entire neighborhood to explore, Pompano Beach is the perfect location to stay fit as a family.
