Many people assume that to get in shape you've got to be confined within the walls of a gym. That couldn't be farther from the truth! With 52 parks and facilities within Pompano Beach's city limits, you only have to walk a few blocks to discover your next fitness destination.

If you're located in Pompano Beach, read on to discover the top eight destinations to stay physically active.

1. Pompano Community Park

Located at 2001 NE 10th St., Pompano Community Park boasts a playground and open-air amphitheater, as well as bike trails, a walking path, and sports fields. One of the larger parks Pompano has to offer, Pompano Community Park is a one-stop destination for a variety of recreational activities. Fun for the whole family and free to visit, it's the perfect destination to work in some exercise while still enjoying the fresh air.

2. Pompano Beach Aquatic Center

Situated a seven minute walk through Pompano Community Park at 820 NE 18th Ave. The Pompano Beach Aquatic Center is home to two multi-lane pools with lifeguards on active duty and handicap accessible entries. The Aquatic Center is a safe place to bring family, friends, or spend some alone time. Pool One features eight lanes and is 50 meters long, and is kept at 79 degrees to provide an optimal swimming temperature any time of year. Pool Two is slightly smaller, with five lanes at 25 meters long, which makes it preferable to less experienced visitors wanting to swim laps.

The Pompano Aquatic Center offers water aerobics, a swimming school, and private swimming lessons to those wanting to venture into aquatic exercises. The facility is open year-round and is available to residents at $2.00 for adults and $1.50 for children.

3. Mitchell Moore Park

Mitchell Moore Park offers an array of recreational activities for visitors. With an assortment of sports fields and activities, including volleyball, baseball, handball, basketball, football, tennis, and horseshoes, a trip to this park ensures you won't get bored anytime soon. Located at 901 NW 10 St., Mitchell Moore Park is a free-to-enter destination that is sure to get your blood flowing.

4. Kester Park

Featuring a walking and jogging trail as well as a volleyball court, Kester Park is an ideal spot to work in some cardio. Located at 702 NE 6th St., the free park also houses a playground so residents of all ages can enjoy the action.

5. McNab Park

Though a smaller location, McNab Park offers plenty of fun activities the whole family can enjoy. In addition to a walking and jogging trail, this park provides open shuffleboard play Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It's free to participate, and equipment is provided.

Also boasting bocci courts and other sports fields, 2250 East Atlantic Blvd. is the spot to visit for hours of fun.

6. Exchange Club Park

Located at 2800 NE 24 St., Exchange Club Park has recently undergone a refresh in which the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) removed all non-native plant and tree species, and cleaned up the area around the previous walking path. The updated park now features an easy to navigate walking track, as well as an area to fish. If you visit Exchange Club Park, bear in mind it only remains open from sunrise to sunset.

7. Pompano Airpark Trail

Featuring 4.4 miles of asphalt track, the Pompano Airpark Trail is the ideal spot to bike or jog. The trail is located at 1001 NE 10th St., right next to the dog park. Now even your four-legged family members can join in your outdoor excursions, as the trail is pet-friendly.

8. Pompano Beach

It goes without question that Pompano Beach is the perfect spot to relax, breathe in fresh air, and work on your fitness. Walking or jogging on sand is more difficult than asphalt, as the muscles in your feet and legs have to work harder to push off the sand, which gives way when pressure is applied. When accompanied by a proper stretching routine, a jog on the beach can burn a ton of calories.

Likewise, keep an eye out for workout classes offered on the beach. Many Saturday mornings, residents meet on the beach to enjoy the waves and get a workout. Grab your mat and towel, and hit the beach!
